Discussion: Grass- Family Poaceae. Monocot. Leaves: flap where leaf joins sheeth (ligule) with notch at center and angle from stem at 45 degrees. Leaf sheath hairy at base of plant; stiff elongate cartilaginous brown auricles at base of leaf blades are characteristic. Flowers: chestnut brown flower heads with bright yellow stamens; later fading to grayish brown; depending on maturity, hairs about the spikelets are first golden brown, and later on drying, grayish. Flowering stems are up to 7' tall. Roots: scaly rhizomes. Seeds: hairy and have twisted bristle tips.
